First Exploration is part of a series of substantially constructed pieces with a contemporary minimalist edge. This collection was also my first journey into jewellery making and working with silver and resin. The collection is subdivided into two bold ranges: Pale Blue Dot and Rings of Saturn.

The original inspiration for these pieces is a quotation from a book called Pale Blue Dot, by my childhood hero Carl Sagan. The book is named after a photograph of Earth taken by the Voyager 1 space probe in 1990. Said Sagan:

“Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every 'superstar', every 'supreme leader', every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there, on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam."

Voyager 1 is part of the continuing Voyager Program to study the outer Solar System. Prior to photographing Earth from the edge of our Solar System, it also took images of Saturn. Today, the Cassini Mission is exploring this beautiful planet.

The Voyager space probe carries a gold-plated audio-visual disc in the event that the spacecraft is ever found by intelligent life forms from other planetary systems. The disc carries photos of the Earth and its lifeforms, a range of scientific information, spoken greetings from people such as the Secretary-General of the United Nations, a medley called Sounds of Earth that includes the sounds of whales, a baby crying, waves breaking on a shore, and a collection of music from different cultures and eras. The record also contains greetings in 55 different languages (source: Wikipedia).

For me, Pale Blue Dot and Voyager 1’s peace message are just the beginning, an exploration that will never tire.
